The recent rains (lots) have produced a once every hundred years bloom. I've been out and about in the Mojave Desert when I can checking it out. This time last year the plants were scarcely green. This year, a different story all together.

I shall post some personal pix, I just havnt had the chance yet. My digital camera was giving me a rash of shit too till I gave it a good smack.

It conked out and didnt save the one I took of some kayakers actually on the playa of Death Valley. It had a few feet of water!! about a mile across. I would hope they didn't fall in, that water so alkaline it would eat the meat of yer bones!

#2 looks up a hill to a couple of abandoned mines.

The pix don't do justice. The lavender, golds and purples 'disappear' against the ground. The white flowers are very tiny. But the yellow desert daisies are EVERYWHERE!

That is a Gold Cholla cactus carcass. They make great candle holders. Find a jar the right size and put it in the top, and a votive. looks hella keewl.

One major drawback of Mother Natures bountiful bloom is my allergies are killing me right now! :dazed:

Prickly Pear cactus. The blooms/fruit are damn useful in mead! and Jelly. It's been used as a medicinal plant by SW Indians for centuries. Cholestrol and Immune system.

It takes years to get all the thorns out of your skin! :scared:

Which cactus is it that produces mescalin?

Mescaline comes from a couple of cacti most common is peyote and san pedro cactuses. Mescal, a stomach striping distillate comes from cactus, but not the psycoactive ones. Although some of the Indios in the backcountry of Mexico and such do use the san pedro to distill some nasty ass stuff.

I havnt seen a peyote plant in a while, but you used to go out hiking and woop, there one.

Stuff will kill you or make you wake up 3 days latter in Spain... smelling like bacon...
