View Full Version : What a Wonderful Night

I just had to share my wonderful night with my buddies here. It was graduation night at the school where I work. My kids are growing up sooo fast. The boys all looked so handsome, and the girls were beautiful. I only had one student from my room graduate, and she graduated from the eighth grade. She was asked to give a speech to all the parents, staff, family and friends that were there....not sure how many were there, but the school sure did get hot and muggy with all the bodies....I sat with the graduates, to supervise them since they are all BD/ED and LD.

anyhooo....her speech made me cry, and I had to go to my classroom to put some cold water on my face. She was so nervous before she went up to read her speech, so I took her aside and gave her some pointers. She sooo didn't want to give it, she was so nervous she was shaking..but, when her name was called, she got up in front of all those people to read the speech she had prepared. The first person she thanked for helping her so much was ME.....and my sensitive ass started to  .

I wish I could post their pictures so you could see just how handsome and beautiful they all were...but I can't due to confidentiality laws. Some took pictures with me before my batteries went dead...I could post those, but you'd only be able to see me, I would have to smear out their faces :( .

My daughter and one of her friends came as well...my daughter used to come to my job quite often when she was little, but hasn't been there in about 4 years. Took them out to a late dinner afterwards, and when we got back to their car at the school/residential facility...my daughter wanted to see a guy I've worked side by side with for 11 years. She used to HATE him after I brought her with one day, after she had been getting into a lot of legal shit and was in treatment for two years. My friend, Emerson, took her aside and slammed her up against a brick wall and chewed her a new asshole...something that should have been done by her own father had he been a father. She wanted to see him to thank him for what he had done and said to her all those years ago...so, we stopped at the boy's unit that I work at when we don't have school (Bush Cottage) and he was there. She was so excited to see him, he gave her a huge hug (we're really big huggers where I work), told her how much he has missed her....and she thanked him for what he had done and said to her...I started to  again..stoopid sensitive ass of mine.

ahhhh.....I loved my night tonight.....I love my daughter...I love my kids...I love the guys I work with.....and every year at graduation, I realize all over again why I went into this line of work. "D" told me last night that when he went to last year's graduation, he had never experienced that kind of pride towards kids that he wasn't related to....he came tonight as well, also one of the staff sitting with the kids to supervise and one of the students gave him a big "thank you" for always being there for him, to guide him, help him, and teach him how to be a man...."D" started getting misty eyed as well

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I love my life :)

You should be proud of what you've achived with the students and it doesn't surprise me in the least that the 1st person the star of the night choose to thank was you. Over the last few years you have undoubtedly been a major influence on her and she couldn't have achieved so much without you're love and dedication. So you are allowed to get a little teary on a night like this

It's also great to see that your daughter is starting to grow up as well as she proved by her actions

if you believe in something enough...stick with it and kick arse doing it

MamaBush
06-05-2005, 05:54 AM
Thanks guys....and I do kick arse doing what I do. Don't always do it the "therapeutic" way as most of my supervisors want me to, but the supervisors who know me well, know that my "unorthodox" way of dealing with the kids is effective and they leave me alone because they know my way works.

And Wannabe, I am sticking with it....which is why I'm working on my Master's in special education. Once I earn that baby, I won't have this constant nagging in the back of my head that they'll move me to yet another classroom to deal with yet another group of kids...but I will say, all of the kids I've taught in other classrooms over the past 3 and a half years, constantly bitch to others and me that they want to be back in my room, or have me back in their rooms to teach again....hell, I've even had kids I've never taught begging to come to my room so I can be their teacher.

All it is is a matter of treating them like human beings, being honest, getting in their asses when they need it, hugging them if they need it or not, and having fun while still demanding that they work to their potential. Yes, life is good, very good.

MamaBush

Here in the U.S., there is no inbetween teaching, the way it sounds like what you're Bachelor's will be for.....we get kids here in the states who speak no English at all, and are labeled as special ed students so they can be placed in ESL classes.

TESOL teachers in oz teach new migrants etc..plenty of jobs o/s for teaching positions. this is not classed as special ed or anything like that.
basically you teach them to speak read and write english. i studied japanese language over 10 years ago and TESOL is the same only its english for people who are not native speakers and want to learn it

MamaBush
06-05-2005, 07:11 AM
That sounds like something the United States needs to start doing for all our immigrants.....I feel sorry for kids who are put into our public schools, who don't speak any English, can't read it, can't write it....but are expected to learn it quickly or else be labeled special ed so they can receive ESL services.

Mama hows the situation where you are in regards to Mexican immigrants and languge? Here in the Southwest most issues of non- English speaking children derive from illegal immigration. Mexicans who have anchor babies and their kids go to public schools with zero English, wheras Anglo kids enter school with modicom of English vocab. Mind you their parents have usually been issued drivers licences even though they cant read the road signs.

Yet on the other hand; Asian children fresh off the boat, so to speak, master English within 6 months typically.

I just wonder if there needs to be any emphasis on parents preparing their children to enter into school to have SOME abitlity to speak English.
I live in a great country. Free medical and education. Free legal service. Welfare. food stamps. The land of plenty.

I need to quit my job.
Nothing wrong with free education...that's how it should be.

And, it would be nice if EVERYONE had free medical. We have a lot of working poor people who can't afford health insurance or work for companies who can't afford to have healh insurance for their employees. Hell, most companies who used to have health insurance for their employees are cutting that benefit out because it's so fucking expensive. My employee changes our health insurance plan every July 1st, and each year, we pay more and more into the health plan...but at least we have it.

Free legal service....that is changing as well, and people are having to pay towards any legal service they seek.

As far as welfare and food stamps.....that program differs from state to state.

Wannabe is correct though when he says there's "nothing" free. The old system of especially welfare and food stamps, where a person could simply go and apply and most times get accepted simply because they have a child, is changing from state to state. Which is why more and more people are applying for SSI, then getting denied, because that system is so over run now with people who used to live off the welfare system and are not living off the SSI system. And both systems are very invasive when it comes to the information they want from an individual.

what my point is that we should indeed have opportunities for education in this country. However, the problem of illegal immigration poses problems for the system for all children. THere are too many illegals who dont pay into the system (those who say they do should note that they cannot legaly get a SS card). ALso millions of dollars get sent back to say Mexico each year. Thats not money thats going into the tax pot for education for sure. Yet the schools get more students.

Worse yet would be a socilized medical system. For one thing there are far too many people who simply cannot afford the extended tax burden that would create. The same problem with illegal immigrants in regards to education also apply to the medical equasion. Border hospitals are going bankrupt or being bailed out by federal funds due to illegals who can not payt their hospital bills. While yes it's a basic human right to have care, there also needs to be a ballance. Because if hospitals do close, NOBODY gets care.

What needs to happen IMHO is to fix the insurance/medical establishment Philosophies and the massive fruad and overbilling. Regulate pharmeceutical profits (by subsidising low return drugs for example: these manufactures wont put R&D into drugs that are marginal) But basicly they need to fix the system.

I for one dont relish the idea of paying for some trannys alterations out my tax dollars when the kids could use more money to get some textbooks!

My point on the free legal is all the pro bono work NLG or ACLU lawyers do when they think they have some shot at getting rich off some bogus lawsuit. Gee, my client smoked cigaretts for years and got sick who can we sue?

We tried a universal health system here and it was almost working until the Govt decided that the Health care funds (privately ran by doctors) were no longer amking a profit so they changed the rules forcing people to take out private health care and getting tax rebates for it. The govt was basically money to these companies that could have been spent on providing health care!
We've now reached the stage where they are discharging psych patients due to the lack of a bed and they are going on a shooting spree, apart from the dead there are the wounded taking up even more beds in the overcrowded hospitals.
A friend was taken to hospital 12 days ago, in a coma, he was slated for a transfer to another hospital but the bed fell thru, he spent the next 4 days in a bed in the hallway, he's only a minor case - suspected liver cancer

MamaBush
06-10-2005, 07:09 AM

Overcrowded hospitals are becoming worse. No new facilities are going up, too many are going bankrupt.

I don't believe there can be a truly utopian society. Thats also my point. Americas Socialist, Revisionist, and far Left are trying to make utopia, at the expense of what made America so good. Yes there are problems, but I can't think of anyplace that doest have worse problems in most ways. The free enterprise system at the very least offers incentive. THere's not too many alternative countries that I would go to if I needed say open heart surgery, even though I may go destitute.

Hope your bud comes through Zokes!
