View Full Version : BEER! what else is there to talk about?

Beer is simply fermented; hop flavored, malt sugared, liquid. The basic ingredients of beer are water, grain, hops, and yeast. The major variation in beer is the type of yeast used to ferment the product.
Water; comprises more than 90% of beer.
Barley; is a basic cereal grain not particularly good for flour, bread or bakery goods.
But it is great for beer. Barley must be malted before being used to brew beer. Malting is a process of allowing it to sprout roots (germinate) and take the first step to becoming a normal plant. It is at this point that the seed is rich in the starch it needs to use as food by the yeast.
Hops; are a flowering vine whose flowers are used to add flavor and aroma to balance the sweetness of the malt.
Yeast; is the most essential, yet least understood aspect of brewing beer. The yeast is there to convert the sugars in the barley into alcohol. The yeast breaks down the glucose sugars into carbon dioxide, water, and alcohol. Yeast cannot ferment all sugars, which is why beer still has a sweet taste at the end of the ferment.
Beer is divided into 2 groups, Ales & Lager.
Ale yeast ferment at the "top" of the fermentation vessel, at a higher temperature 60°-75°F. The average fermentation for ale yeast is 7-8 days.
Lager yeast ferment at the bottom of the fermentation vessel, at a lower temperature, around 34°F. The average fermentation for lager is 30 days or more.
And remember;
Always use safe judgment and never abuse alcohol.
Do not drink and drive.

Brewing isnt a hobby as much as simply a basic household chore. Like making dinner.
For example I can barter goods and services with my brews.
If were talking pastimes then swigging good beer, BBQing good eats and wooing the lady thats all good.
Making beer is more to do with the art and science- zymurgy. And infinatly better use of time than sitting about watching the magic picture box all day.
then why????
The Budweiser is purely for research purposes for my essay. Fact is, Bud is useful for doing repair work on the truck. It's an excellent all purpose parts cleaner and thread lubricant. It's also good as an anti-biotic if you manage to gash open a knuckle while working. Just pour some Bud on it, and keep the good stuff for drinking.

I didn't realise the alcohol level was high enuff in bud to kill germs, that usually needs around 2%
I didn't realise the alcohol level was high enuff in bud to kill germs, that usually needs around 2%
butt I mean bud is around 3% but the carbonation feels weird when poured on a cut.... I have 1 beer left that is 7% saving it for a friend...:loldevil: :bananadog

anything higher than 12% is considered a 'malt liqour' which unfortunatly has your Colt 45 and other ghettobrews.
It's hardly dignified to call a well crafted barleywine a "malt Liqour".
all this beer talk is making me thirsty
