View Full Version : vinyl to digital

Gnome

OK.

I've finally need to address a project that I've needed to get on for some time.

I have a sizable music collection of vinyl records thats I've been collecting for a helluva long time. The records are just gathering dust in the milk crates and I hope to reduce the clutter of them down to a few collectables.

Anybody have any info on the finer points of transfering vinyl to MP3? I have an ad for a turntable that hooks to USB for under $200.

search for: TTUSB....

LINK<<<< (http://www.numark.com/)

anybody ever save their old records this way?

zokah

I did transfer a few the hard way.
I fed the output from my amp to the audio input on the puta

Gnome
09-18-2006, 08:56 AM
yea thats the configuration that I've found the most online. Thats why I'm interested in this USB thinger, it looks like it has it's own pre-amp. and the local guitar shop is selling them for $165. But I don't know if i'm going to get a better RIP that ways or through the audio jacks.

zokah
09-19-2006, 01:51 AM
I think the audio jacks, USB can be slow so it may degrade what quality there is to keep the transfer going

Gnome
09-19-2006, 06:44 PM
Hmmm this is going to be a fun project

zokah
09-20-2006, 02:12 AM
any project involving computer and music should be fun but should not be commenced sober

Gnome
09-20-2006, 07:02 PM
thats the scary part.

Even vaguely buzzed, I can have records strewn all over the fukin place, listening to old favorites, cleaning the silly things.

but with the new softwares, gone are the days when the best way to remove a skip was to plow :scared: through it with some pennies stacked on the tone arm

zokah
09-21-2006, 01:56 AM
yeah, and I'm constantly changing records to listen to a track from a different album

Gnome
09-21-2006, 09:47 AM
exactly. I'm stoked about getting my tunes from vinyl just for that reason- to make custom mixes of stuff from spoken word to indy 70's punk

zokah
09-22-2006, 02:01 AM
could make some great mash-ups

Gnome
09-22-2006, 07:50 PM
well I went and got this USB turntable for my prezzie to myself. I managed to get out of the guitar shop before I really fucked up.

Havnt got to hooking it up but I dug out my old cleaning kit, got some new cleaner fluid. But I've been sidetracked all day, my bro brought over a DVD chock full of Ripped iTunes..joy!

zokah
09-23-2006, 01:44 AM
thats a great borthday pressie

Gnome
09-23-2006, 09:17 AM
yea I'm stoked.

Heres the Freeware that came with the turntable>>
Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)

then I went here and got all sorts of bad ideas

zokah
09-23-2006, 09:15 PM
You should try and find something called "Pro Tools" if you want to do some serious mixing.
I'm led to believe it works better on a Mac but will work with a PC

Gnome
09-24-2006, 10:13 AM
oh I would loveto spend that kind of cash.

If I was gonna go that far, a few synths, drum machines/sequencers would be on order too. With an effects rack, multi-track recorder and a room in the house with egg crates stapled to the wall ^_^

zokah
09-24-2006, 03:01 PM
I did see a cracked version on a torrent site recently

Gnome

Production is in full effect and doing well.

I have 20 albums Ripped into my RAID and have begun to feel the nuances of noise removal and recording control.

the files are big ol warpigs! Tognite I got The Go_Betweens (16 Lovers Lane), The Stone Roses, several Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians. With some Spanish guitar and {{{Berlin}}}

^_^

I LIke it!!

zokah
10-28-2006, 10:32 PM
the files should be that big if they're MP3 format, sure they aren't being saved as .wav?

Gnome
10-29-2006, 01:59 PM
The Audacity program lets you export as WAV, MP3 and the Ogg Vorbis formats with various controls over the track names and organization. What I've been doing is export as a WAV then drop them in iTunes. From there I can rip to CD's.

The MP3 option isn't proprietary to Adacity so I'll need a third party MP3 generator if I want to compress them right out of the program. Any ideas on some good ones?

zokah
10-30-2006, 12:26 AM
I use Goldwave for all my audio editing and it gives many export options. I just use MPEG audio[mp3] then burn to CDs
let me know if you want a cracked version

Gnome
10-30-2006, 10:33 AM
perhaps. I'm reading the specs and Audacity is on par with a lot of its features. THis one has a much better interface and the ability to convert raw binary.

I got a little MP3 converter from Download and it's been doing a nice job. I'll probably burn the original Audacity project files to DVD after I make em MP3.

zokah
10-31-2006, 01:10 AM
sounds like you've got it then

Gnome
10-31-2006, 10:02 PM
I'm trying to get an ear on the difference on audio nuances at high sample rates, and what the compression of MP3 make from it. On digital equipment like my trucks CD or the surround sound I cant tell much differences. I need to get the venerable Pioneer class 3 amp and Bose back up and running to hear the maximum audio depth.

One of the next projects: re-coneing my Bose 901's to their former glory.

Hard to believe these speakers are fetching almost the original price (from 1975) on line!!

zokah
11-01-2006, 12:31 AM
if I can't tell the difference between recordings then it's good enuff.

Gnome
11-01-2006, 09:00 PM
A classic record for dialing in audio systems at oen time was Genesis's live album "Seconds Out" the dynamic range is outstanding and recording engineering was top notch. I'm interested in adjusting these levels to optimize digital music for old fashioned stereo.

or even the avant garde audio ^_^

must have gear (http://europe.rotel.com/)

zokah
11-02-2006, 01:06 AM
Yeah, some of the would be great to listen to " 4'33 " by John Cage or Mike Batt's "A Minute's Silence" :D

Gnome
11-02-2006, 09:19 PM
you like that spacial stuff eh? like some of Brian Enos early experimental minimalist environmental. the operative word being 'mental'

I just got done ripping Moondawn by Klause Shultze only two tracks on the whole record, one tune each side. Those Germans where so good with the funky synthezoidies. Kraftwerk being the granddaddies of techno.

zokah
11-03-2006, 12:40 AM
I got a lot of respekt for Kraftwork

Did you ever read about the breach of copyright case involving the 2 "tunes" I mentioned? What difference is there between 2 recordings of nothing? :D

Gnome
11-03-2006, 10:00 PM
no doubt. who has IP on spacial emptyness?

I just looked into the other implications of copyrights on say, blank pages in books.

But I've been pointing at blank canvases for years telling people it's an alternate universe composition that represents what the Zen Buddhist call the Void.

nobody seems to buy my bullshit

zokah
11-04-2006, 01:33 AM
I wonder why, is it being sold cheaper down the road?

Gnome
11-04-2006, 09:00 PM
one could say the vast majority of media, especially the written word is about as valuable as a recording of a blank tape. just marketed different.

zokah
11-05-2006, 01:28 AM
Sony makes more profit from the sale of blank CDs than from the sale of recorded music I think

Gnome
11-05-2006, 06:25 PM
oh hell yea! HA!

As of late I have been frequenting a record shop that has become dear to my heart

like the bad ass music shops of yesterday this place is loaded with indy and local stuff. DVDs, extensive metal, punk, underground hiphop and other tunage. they buy trade, sell vinyl and cary posters, incense, and 'paraphanalia' of all manners.

I'm hoping I can unlaod my records on them when I'm done rippin'

MamaBush
11-05-2006, 07:11 PM
huh??

Gnome
11-06-2006, 01:33 AM
excuse my exuberance. ^_^

among other things; I consider music very dear to me. Something so tangible and sublime that started when I was very young. I've studied music for years, like to listen to anything.
gotta have it.

A nice shop full of tunage is really mondo.

zokah
11-06-2006, 02:39 AM
I look at my vinal as an investment so I won't part with them easily. The covers of some are works of art, even those that aren't autographed by people like Bon Scott, Micheal Hutchence, Nick Cave or even Fat Mike of NOFX.
No amount of money could replace my copy of Frenzal Rhomb's "A man's not a camel" where the autographs are interspersed by rings caused the boys putting down their beers while considering if it was worth signing as we were discussing the merits of the literal interpretations of track 7 as opposed to track 12. We agreed that track 7 was the better option and it was Gordys shout (it proves again that drummers aren't the smartest)

Gnome
11-06-2006, 09:53 AM
yea theres a gem to keep no doubt.

I'm hoping to wittle most the records down to a handful of rare and collectable. I've been perusing online collectors groups and resources getting an idea of what some are worth. I'll keep the good ones. Original pressings of Zep I II III, old punk, my rare Iron Maiden 12" picture disks, and old jazz & big band from the 40's & 50's and my Devo disk with autographs

zokah
11-07-2006, 12:18 AM
if you don't want the zeps you can always give them to me :D

Gnome
11-07-2006, 06:03 PM
HAa! shipping would prolly cost more than their worth, I'm looking at one on Zillion for $14

There a bid on eBay for 199 records including Zep 1,2 & 3 up to $950 but most of it is lame shit

zokah
11-08-2006, 12:31 AM
I thought original pressings would be worth more than that

Gnome
11-08-2006, 06:55 PM
me too.

A search on ebay and opening seem to be between $7 and $20 and a mixmash or reissues and originals. I've found a ton of resources online but havnt got too far into them yet

zokah
11-09-2006, 12:33 AM
I'd never buy vinyl on loine cos there is no way to check the quality

MamaBush
11-09-2006, 03:26 PM

zokah
11-10-2006, 12:46 AM

Gnome

I hear ya.

Theres two awesome vintage record shops here in town yet I have little to offer them that they dont already have. Setting up a booth at the swapmeet would be a drag.

zokah
11-11-2006, 01:30 AM
I'm a regular visitor to Glenn A. Bakers shop - he is "The rock brain of the Universe" and has an awesome collection. I once estimated it'd need an 8ton truck just to move the vinyl and he has no more than 2 copies of anything on hand. I'd like to see his wharehouse

Gnome
11-11-2006, 09:52 PM
Thats gotta be the dude to see for replacement stylus'

It's a blessing to come across somebody who can turn you on to suggestions of tunage that hit the spot. Used to be a DJ at UNLV who would say "go buy this and this" and I'd never be dissapointed.

Nowadays those listening stations can really save you!

zokah
11-12-2006, 02:00 AM
I haven't bought anything "new" since Napster v1.0 :D

Gnome
11-12-2006, 06:42 PM
I hear you. It's only once in a while where I'll buy something. Mostly obscure stuff that never pops up anyplace.

Net radio has been very good to me tho.

zokah
11-14-2006, 12:35 AM
what do you use to rip it?
I find that WMRecorder does a good job

Gnome
11-14-2006, 08:42 PM
havnt captured any streaming yet. a lot of stations like Radioio have tight playlist so I'll usually hear the same stuff after a few days. But good God it's better than the tired shit on broadcast radio. I'll bet you right now on the 'classic rock' station their playing 1 of only three Hendrix tunes, one of maybe 3 ACDC tunes or Bob fuckin Seger .

classic rock my ass.

I think I'll d/l WMrecorder tho and catch some of my faves.

zokah
11-15-2006, 01:21 AM
It's good for ripping streams. I can find my folder containing the .exe and everything else or I'd upload it. The latest version 11.2 isn't free - yet ;)

Edit: check your PMs :D

Gnome
11-15-2006, 11:17 PM

the only stuff I seem to listen to anymore is ambient, space music for daze.

zokah
11-16-2006, 12:39 AM
the soundtrack from "2001"?

Gnome
11-16-2006, 08:31 PM
thats DeBussy I think.

I listened to Hearts of Space for many years, still do, but I can get my ambient fix mainlined right into my brain.

I set up WM Recorder today. Still getting a feel on setup. I think it will be quite fun to play about with.

Hearts of Space (http://www.hos.com/)

safe journey spacefans...

zokah
11-17-2006, 12:46 AM
it does have a steep learning curve but once you get the hang of it you can fill a HD from streaming wmp sites while your away

If you want something from the "Chill Out/Ambient" genre or even whats called "trance' try a site called w*w.mp3spread.net they seem to like sendspace for storage which can be a pain but it's better than paying :D

Gnome
11-17-2006, 10:13 PM
ooooooooo

sweet!

I can wait for the ticket thinger to run down! and I pulled an 86mb file in under 5 mins at 5.5 d/l speed with iTUnes and this place running too.. servers gotta be in Europe someplace?

zokah
11-18-2006, 12:50 AM
I thought you'd like it :D
sendspace isn't bad as long as there are vacant d/l spots. I have no idea where their servers are

Gnome
11-18-2006, 10:29 PM
i prolly could find out if I dug about. if they are in another time zone that would let me find the best d/l time

damn- i need to get a bigger jump drive soon

zokah
11-19-2006, 01:40 AM
I think they are like RS and have several servers

Gnome
11-19-2006, 11:33 AM
I've been getting lot of hits on my firewall in the past few weeks. Seems more so when I have a streaming connection running. I'm concerned about a 'Run DLL and an App' entry in my firewall summary. Supposedly my spyware filter is running well. But I'm not sure if my security could be improved.

zokah
11-19-2006, 06:47 PM
you could try dragging them into a program call "MST is used by" - freeware get it here - http://www.mstsoftware.com/cFreeware.aspx
or maybe "What's running" http://www.whatsrunning.net/whatsrunning/download.aspx and look around in the drivers and startup could always give a clue

Gnome
11-19-2006, 11:45 PM
I like the idea of seeing the driver status! and MST is used by looks like it might shed light on a odd problem I've been having deleting Illustrator EPS files that where done in CS 2 wont let me do it sometimes even after rebooting. No linked files too!

It's a real bitch when I try to burn a DVD and the temp files wont clear.

zokah
11-21-2006, 12:41 AM
it's all part of my security consciousness. I gotta know what's on my system and what it's for. I got another program called "WTF" that googles anything thats running, I can't find the .exe or a working link to it for you though.
You might find this page (http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm) of some use, it's a list of tasklists

MamaBush
11-21-2006, 04:35 PM
huh??

Gnome
11-21-2006, 07:38 PM
I like that. That will be good to keep tabs on apps I have that I dont want phoning home. If only Task Manager could let you hide system processes.
